Despite the National Identity Management Commission's (NIMC) assertions of progress, Nigeria's national database remains fragmented, undermining the goal of a unified identity system. Various sectors, including banking and telecommunications, continue to operate on siloed data registrations, hindering comprehensive integration. The absence of a cohesive database means that while the National Identification Number (NIN) is used for verification, it does not equate to a unified national database.

Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, NIMC's Director-General, emphasized, "We are making strides towards a more integrated system, but collaboration across sectors is essential for true unification." This highlights the ongoing challenge of aligning the disparate systems used by different entities. The lack of interoperability raises concerns about data security and accessibility, which are critical for effective governance and service delivery.

Looking ahead, the Nigerian government must prioritize collaboration between agencies and private entities to bridge these gaps. A truly unified database could enhance service efficiency and foster trust among citizens, ultimately contributing to national development. Without concerted efforts, the promise of a seamless identity management system may remain unfulfilled.
