The call for greater infrastructural development in the South-South region comes at a crucial time as Nigeria seeks to balance its economic growth. The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has expressed concern over the recent approval of 26 major highway projects across 15 states, noting that only one, the Benue-Cross River road, borders the South-South. This oversight raises questions about equity in resource allocation and regional development, as PANDEF describes the situation as “deeply troubling.”
Historical neglect of the South-South, despite its rich oil resources, has led to calls for urgent action. Stakeholders emphasize that equitable infrastructure development is essential for fostering economic opportunities and social cohesion. "The South-South deserves its fair share of infrastructural investment to unlock its potential and contribute to national growth," stated PANDEF’s National President, Edwin Clark.
Looking forward, the federal government must prioritize inclusive development strategies that recognize the unique needs of all regions. Addressing infrastructure deficits in the South-South could not only stimulate local economies but also enhance national unity, paving the way for a more balanced and prosperous Nigeria.
