This advisory stems from increasing tensions fueled by economic challenges and xenophobic sentiments, which have historically led to violence against foreign nationals. The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg has reiterated the importance of adhering to safety protocols, including avoiding protest areas.
NiDCOM Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa emphasized, “We urge all Nigerians to remain vigilant and heed the guidelines provided by the consulate to ensure their safety during this turbulent period.” The unrest has prompted not only concerns for immediate safety but also questions about the long-term implications for the Nigerian community in South Africa, which has been a significant diaspora population.
