In a significant development, the Police and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have rescued fourteen kidnapping victims from sea pirates operating along the Calabar–Oron waterways. This operation underscores the persistent threat of maritime crime in Nigeria, which has seen an alarming rise in abductions for ransom, particularly in coastal regions.
The victims were reportedly abducted while traveling by boat, highlighting the vulnerabilities faced by individuals in these waterways. The joint task force’s swift response not only ensured the victims' safe return but also reflects a growing commitment among security agencies to combat piracy. "Our collaboration with the EFCC has proven essential in tackling these maritime threats," stated Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba. "We are determined to restore safety in our waters."
Looking ahead, this successful rescue operation may serve as a catalyst for more robust measures against maritime crime. Continued coordination between law enforcement agencies will be crucial in dismantling the networks responsible for these acts, ultimately fostering safer transportation routes for local communities.
