Nigeria is taking significant steps to enhance its security framework by training a new cadre of weapons experts aimed at curbing the diversion of small arms and light weapons. This initiative, announced by the Director-General of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, retired DIG Johnson Kokumo, is a response to the escalating concerns over arms proliferation fueling violence across the nation.
The training program is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the country's security apparatus and ensure that weapons are accounted for and used responsibly. Kokumo emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "Our goal is to create a more secure environment by ensuring that our personnel are equipped with the necessary skills to manage and control arms effectively." This move comes amid ongoing challenges with insurgency and criminal activities linked to illegal arms.
Looking ahead, Nigeria's commitment to building a skilled workforce in arms management could play a crucial role in stabilizing the country. By addressing the root causes of arms diversion, Nigeria aims to foster a safer environment, which is essential for sustainable development and peace in the region.
