Nigeria is taking a significant step to bolster its aviation sector by establishing a new aircraft leasing company that will allow airlines to make payments in naira. This initiative, announced by the aviation minister, aims to alleviate the financial burdens faced by local airlines, which have been grappling with foreign exchange shortages that inflate operational costs.

The leasing company is expected to provide a more accessible path for domestic airlines to acquire aircraft, making it easier for them to compete regionally and potentially serve operators across Africa. Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “This initiative will not only enhance our aviation sector but also stimulate economic growth by creating jobs and attracting investments.”

As Nigeria positions itself as a hub for aviation in Africa, the success of this initiative will depend on its execution and the responsiveness of local airlines. If properly implemented, the leasing company could transform the landscape of air travel in Nigeria, ultimately fostering a more resilient and competitive aviation industry on the continent.
