Nigeria is taking decisive steps to enhance climate accountability by inaugurating a Project Steering Committee (PSC) for the Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT) backed by the Global Environment Facility. This initiative aims to bolster the country's capacity to report on climate-related issues, a critical requirement as Nigeria faces increasing environmental challenges and global scrutiny regarding its climate commitments.

The PSC will oversee efforts to improve data collection and reporting mechanisms, ensuring transparency in Nigeria's climate actions. This move comes amid rising concerns about the country's environmental policies and their effectiveness. “This committee represents a significant commitment to transparency and accountability in our climate actions,” said Dr. Amina Mohammed, Minister of Environment. She emphasized the importance of building trust with stakeholders and the international community.

Looking ahead, the establishment of the PSC could position Nigeria as a leader in climate governance within Africa. By enhancing its reporting framework, Nigeria not only addresses its domestic environmental challenges but also aligns itself with global climate goals, potentially attracting more international support and investment in sustainable initiatives.
