Nigeria's mental health crisis continues to escalate, prompting the launch of the nation’s first public-facing Mental Health Policy Commitment Tracker by Nigerian Mental Health (NMH). This initiative comes four years after the enactment of the Mental Health Act, which aimed to improve services and support for millions suffering from mental health issues. However, key reforms have stalled, leaving many vulnerable and without adequate care.
The Tracker is designed to expose policy failures and enhance accountability among stakeholders. Chioma Obinna of Vanguard reports that NMH aims to hold the government accountable for its commitments, emphasizing that “transparent tracking of policy implementation is crucial to ensure that mental health receives the attention it urgently needs.” The move signals a growing recognition of mental health as a critical public health issue in Nigeria, yet the challenge remains steep.
