Nigeria is poised to significantly reduce shipping costs following a four-year decline in piracy incidents, marking a transformative period for its maritime industry. The nation is advocating for its removal from the global war-risk list, a status that has historically inflated insurance premiums and deterred international shipping lines. With zero reported piracy incidents since 2022, authorities believe the time is ripe for this change.

"The safety of our waters has improved dramatically, and we are ready to welcome international shipping back with lower costs," said Bashir Jamoh, Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency. This shift not only enhances Nigeria's attractiveness as a shipping destination but also has the potential to stimulate economic growth by lowering import and export costs.

As Nigeria works towards reestablishing its maritime reputation, it faces the challenge of maintaining this security momentum. If successful, the removal from the war-risk list could lead to a resurgence in shipping activity and bolster the nation’s economy, positioning Nigeria as a key player in global trade routes once again.
