The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is taking significant strides to alleviate the disruptive practice of repeated road digging for fibre installation through the implementation of a cost-based pricing framework. This initiative, part of the broader Dig Once policy, aims to promote efficient use of existing underground telecom ducts, thereby minimizing road damage and enhancing service delivery across the nation.

Stakeholders, including telecom operators and infrastructure providers, have expressed their support for this initiative, recognizing the long-term benefits it offers. “This collaborative approach will not only reduce costs for operators but also improve the overall quality of service for consumers,” stated Umar Danbatta, NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman. The move follows years of challenges faced by both telecom companies and local governments due to the frequent disruptions caused by construction activities.

As Nigeria continues to invest in its digital infrastructure, the success of the Dig Once policy could serve as a model for other sectors seeking to optimize resource usage. If effectively implemented, this strategy could pave the way for a more streamlined approach to infrastructure development, ultimately contributing to the country’s economic growth and digital transformation.
