Delays in cargo clearance linked to the National Single Window (NSW) platform are imposing significant financial burdens on importers in Nigeria, with daily demurrage costs reaching N100,000. Customs agents have voiced their frustrations, highlighting that these delays are not only straining their operations but also threatening the competitiveness of Nigerian ports.
The National President of the National Council of Managing Directors of Licensed Customs Agents, Tony Nwabunike, stated, “The inefficiencies of the NSW are costing importers dearly and are detrimental to the economy.” The NSW was intended to streamline processes and enhance trade facilitation, but its implementation has faced numerous setbacks, leading to prolonged waiting times for cargo clearance.
As importers continue to bear the brunt of these delays, the need for urgent reforms in the NSW system becomes increasingly apparent. Stakeholders are calling for immediate government intervention to address these inefficiencies, which are not only detrimental to businesses but also to Nigeria's overall trade landscape. Without swift action, the ongoing challenges could deter future investments in the sector, amplifying economic repercussions across the board.
