The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has embarked on a significant initiative by training 44 youths from Ogoniland in underwater welding, aiming to foster sustainable livelihoods while addressing environmental concerns. This program targets ex-artisanal refiners, whose activities have historically contributed to environmental degradation in the region.
The training is part of a broader strategy to transition former illegal oil workers into legitimate employment opportunities, thereby reducing pollution and restoring the ecosystem. Emphasizing the importance of this initiative, HYPREP’s Project Coordinator, Dr. Marvin Dekil, stated, “This training not only empowers the youths but also aids in the environmental restoration of Ogoniland, creating a win-win situation.”
As these youths acquire skills that are in demand both locally and internationally, the hope is that this program will lead to a decrease in illegal refining activities and enhance the community's economic prospects. Looking ahead, the success of this initiative could serve as a model for similar programs across Nigeria, potentially transforming the livelihoods of many and paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable environment.
