Nigerian power generation companies are increasingly alarmed by rampant electricity theft, urging the government to take decisive action against offenders. The growing problem not only undermines the financial viability of the power sector but also hampers efforts to provide reliable energy to consumers. Reports indicate that a significant portion of electricity generated is lost due to illegal connections and fraud, creating a burden on GenCos.

"Unless we identify, arrest, and prosecute those stealing from the grid, we will continue to face challenges that stifle our growth," said Dr. Adeola Olufemi, CEO of PowerGen Nigeria. This call for action comes amid ongoing reforms in the energy sector aimed at attracting investment and improving infrastructure. However, without addressing the issue of theft, these reforms may fail to achieve their intended outcomes.

Looking ahead, the government’s response to this crisis will be crucial. Effective enforcement of laws against electricity theft could not only protect the interests of power companies but also strengthen the overall energy framework in Nigeria, fostering a more stable and sustainable energy future.
