Nigeria's electricity distribution sector has seen a remarkable financial surge, with Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) generating N801 billion in just the first four months of 2026. This windfall is largely attributed to improved metering initiatives, which have enhanced billing accuracy and reduced revenue losses from estimated charges.

The positive trend follows years of inconsistent performance in the power sector, where DisCos struggled with inefficient billing systems and high levels of electricity theft. Industry stakeholders believe that the recent push for comprehensive metering is pivotal. "Accurate metering is a game changer for our revenue streams," said Chiedu Ugbo, Managing Director of Eko Electricity Distribution Company. The emphasis on metering has not only increased consumer trust but also encouraged prompt payments, essential for the sustainability of the sector.

Looking ahead, the challenge remains to maintain this momentum. Continued investment in infrastructure and technology will be crucial to further enhance service delivery and ensure that these financial gains translate into long-term stability and growth in Nigeria's power sector.
