The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has reported that Distribution Companies (DisCos) successfully metered 241,590 customers in the first two months of 2026, bringing the total number of metered customers to 7.2 million. This development is part of an ongoing initiative to enhance electricity distribution and billing accuracy across the country.
Despite the progress, challenges remain in achieving comprehensive metering, with significant portions of Nigeria's population still unaccounted for in terms of access to reliable electricity. NERC’s announcement underscores the importance of metering in the transition towards a more efficient power sector. "The increase in metered customers is a positive step, but we must accelerate efforts to ensure that every Nigerian has access to fair billing practices," said Engr. Sanusi Garba, NERC Chairman.
Looking ahead, the focus will need to be on expanding infrastructure and addressing the financial viability of DisCos to ensure that metering efforts translate into stable power supply and customer satisfaction. As Nigeria strives for a more reliable electricity sector, the momentum gained in metering could be pivotal in reshaping the landscape of energy consumption and distribution.
