Nigerian electricity distribution companies (DisCos) have installed 241,590 meters as part of ongoing efforts to address consumer complaints regarding estimated billing. Despite this initiative, millions of households remain unmetered, leaving them vulnerable to unreliable billing practices that have fueled public frustration. The persistent lack of adequate metering undermines the credibility of DisCos and hampers the overall goal of improving service delivery in the sector.
“The installation of these meters is a step in the right direction, but we need to accelerate the pace to ensure every consumer is metered,” said Chike Anya, spokesperson for the Nigerian Electricity Regulation Commission. This sentiment reflects growing impatience among consumers who demand transparency and fairness in billing. With an estimated 40 million electricity consumers in Nigeria, the challenge of unmetered households continues to loom large.
Looking ahead, the DisCos must not only increase the rate of meter installations but also enhance their customer service to rebuild trust. As the government pushes for reforms in the power sector, the successful resolution of these billing issues will be critical to achieving broader goals of reliability and sustainability in Nigeria's electricity supply.
