A Northern coalition has strongly rebutted the allegations made by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) regarding a supposed misappropriation of N26.9 billion from the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF). The coalition argues that SERAP’s claims are misleading and fail to incorporate essential context surrounding the utilization of the telecom fund, which aims to extend telecommunications services to underserved areas across Nigeria.

In a statement, Abubakar Mohammed, a spokesperson for the coalition, emphasized, “It is crucial to understand the positive impact the USPF has had in bridging the digital divide in rural communities rather than focusing on unfounded allegations.” The coalition asserts that the funds have been directed towards vital infrastructure projects, thereby enhancing connectivity and access to information for millions.

As the debate continues, it underscores the need for transparency and accountability in the management of public funds. Stakeholders are encouraged to engage in constructive dialogue, ensuring that the focus remains on enhancing service delivery rather than being sidetracked by unverified claims. The resolution of this matter could set a significant precedent for future discussions regarding public resource management in Nigeria.
