The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the Ibadan Zone has announced plans to mobilize for a strike at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) and Kwara State University (KWASU) over the non-implementation of previous agreements with state governments. This escalation comes after prolonged negotiations and unmet promises related to salaries and working conditions, which have left faculty members frustrated.
Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State have been urged to act swiftly to prevent further disruptions in academic activities. ASUU's leadership has stressed the importance of adhering to agreements that are crucial for enhancing the educational environment. "We cannot continue to compromise our standards while our welfare remains unaddressed," stated Dr. Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU Ibadan Zone Chairman.
As the situation unfolds, the potential strike could exacerbate the already strained academic calendar in Nigeria, impacting thousands of students. The urgency for dialogue is paramount, as both state governments and the university community must prioritize education over politics to ensure a stable academic future.
