The Abia State Government, in collaboration with UNICEF and the International Labour Organization (ILO), is making strides towards establishing a functional social register to enhance social protection for its citizens. As part of this initiative, the state plans to draft a comprehensive social protection bill aimed at ensuring sustainable support for vulnerable populations, with a submission to the House of Assembly slated for September.

This development comes in the wake of increasing economic hardships and social inequalities exacerbated by the global pandemic. The proposed social register is envisioned as a crucial tool for identifying and assisting those in need. “A functional social register is not just a policy; it is a commitment to our people’s welfare,” stated Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a prominent advocate for social justice in Nigeria.

Looking ahead, the successful implementation of this social protection framework could transform the landscape of social welfare in Abia State, providing a model for other regions. If adopted effectively, it may pave the way for improved access to essential services and greater socio-economic stability for its most vulnerable residents.
