As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, the Association of Licensed Set-Top Box Manufacturers of Nigeria (STBMAN) has sounded the alarm over a potential broadcasting crisis due to the National Broadcasting Commission's (NBC) planned transition from analogue to digital broadcasting. This shift, crucial for modernizing Nigeria's media landscape, may face significant hurdles if the concerns of STB manufacturers remain unaddressed.
STBMAN warns that inadequate infrastructure and the lack of accessible set-top boxes could leave millions of Nigerians without access to critical information during the electoral period. “If the government does not intervene, we risk a scenario where many citizens will be deprived of their right to information,” stated Chijioke Eze, President of STBMAN. This situation could exacerbate existing inequalities and hinder democratic participation, particularly in rural areas.
As the election date draws closer, stakeholders must prioritize collaboration to mitigate these challenges. Ensuring a smooth transition to digital broadcasting will be essential not only for a fair electoral process but also for fostering a more informed citizenry, which is vital for the health of Nigeria's democracy.
